About the Artist

Deb is a beach loving artist who grew up and raised her own family in Hampton, Victoria, later migrating to Port Melbourne, and then Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, where she still loves and enjoys the beach lifestyle.  For many years she managed her successful events management company ‘Events Edge’.  Due to the popularity, over time she specialised in corporate Christmas tree design and installation, developing a reputation for her vibrant and colourful large-scale tailored tree designs and decorations.

In her leisure time, and with a young family, holidays and weekends were always spent along the Victorian surf coast. The memories of bright blue skies, the sound of the surf crashing, beautiful crystal clear aqua blue waters, the smell of the sea, and the white sand oozing between the toes are what have always inspired her, and what she seeks to evoke in her artwork.  Deb’s sons were enthusiastically involved in Torquay Nippers from a very young age which led to her also becoming entrenched in the Surf Lifesaving culture, which she was involved in at various levels for many years.

Deb’s affinity for the sea and desire to always live beside it, gives her a calm and inspiring creative environment in which to produce her art. These precious times and influences inform the work she creates which is also reflective of who she is as a person: Fun, personable, colourful, down to earth, and vibrant.

Deb Skewes

Deb uses gallery quality cotton or linen canvas, sometimes boards depending on the scale and requirements of the artwork. She loves working with acrylic paints as they are gorgeous bright fast drying colours, allowing her to work quickly.  She also delights in experimenting with different mediums and playing with the luxurious elements of iridescence, gold and a sprinkling of glitter!  She loves the versatility of resin often using it as a medium on its own or as a final coat on some of her other art to help create the glossy shiny water look.  Fluid acrylic creates the most amazing cells and the combination of colours within these cells is spectacular.  Alcohol inks are a pure delight to work with because of the fabulous colour explosions she can manipulate.
